VCs: Education Sector Must be Prioritized

The Chancellors of universities in Oyo State have established a plan of action for the incoming administration of Bola Tinubu. These VCs, representing Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo; Kola Daisi University (KDU), Ibadan, and Precious Cornerstone University (PCU), Ibadan, recommended that Tinubu increase budgetary allocation to education, fund research, and support private universities to set the country on a path of accelerated development.

Prof. Adeniyi Olatubosun (SAN), the ACU Vice Chancellor, stated that expectations were high from the president-elect. He urged the incoming administration to give more attention to the education sector, which remains the foundation of the society. The VC suggested that the sector would benefit from increased budgetary allocation and a supportive concept for private universities.

The private university system requires a deliberately constituted enabling environment to contribute significantly to the growth of the education sector. Private universities’ tax burden would be reduced, and they would be able to complement federal and state universities, according to the VC. The government should create schemes to enable students to key in and benefit from funds, and adequate documentation and subsequent tracking of students who would access loans would be possible with BVN already in place. Indigent students would be able to complete their education successfully and repay their loans while working.

There is also a need to increase electricity support for private universities, according to the VC. Adequate and cost-effective electricity or access to energy supply would make for better private university performance. The plights of lecturers and other labour unions should be addressed. The incoming administration should create policies that would enhance industrial harmony and meet the aspirations of Nigeria’s youths.

Prof Julius Oloke of PCU emphasised the need to promote collaboration between the government and universities, where universities provide fact-based research to solve difficult problems. He also emphasised the provision of research grants and an enabling environment for private universities to thrive.
