FUOYE matriculates 7,500 new students virtually

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, has said the institution will rise to the COVID-19 challenge through deployment of more technology to deliver its functions and mandates.

Soremekun called on the authorities of universities in Nigeria to take advantage of technology to deliver sound education to their students, adding that such would go a long way in addressing some of the challenges in the tertiary education system.

The VC spoke at FUOYE during the 2019/2020 virtual matriculation ceremony held for about 7,500 fresh students of the institution.

Soremekun said, โ€œWe have to take a new way and we have had to also raise our games in the area of digital technology. It is the way to go now.

โ€œThe current pandemic would not stop the institution from imparting more on the society. Virtual teaching is one of our destinations. Prior to now, we have put in place plans for the distance learning programme. As regards distance learning education, we have been very proactive.โ€

The VC, who congratulated the new students, warned that management would not tolerate any untoward attitude in the quest to sustain the good academic records.

He appealed to the Federal Government to give prompt attention to the payment of benefits to many university lecturers who had retired over a year and yet to collect their benefits.

Soremekun also urged appropriate authorities to address the delay in the payment of benefits of many retired professors, expressing worry that many of them were dying of hunger.
