COVID-19: ESUT Launches Hand Sanitizers

Enugu State University Of Science And Technology (Esut), Wednesday, launched its brand of hand sanitizers in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor Luke Anike told newsmen at the Agbani campus of the university during the launch that the institution embarked on the project to assist in the fight against the Covid-19 scourge in Nigeria.

According to him, “The university authorities reactivated its Biotech Research Centre to produce sanitizers as an immediate response to combating the disease. We are looking forward to mass producing the sanitizers for students, staff members and the general public when we get funding.”

Anike, a professor, said the institution had already made proposals to the Enugu State government for funding to begin commercial production of the products.

The director of the centre, Floretta Tasie, a professor, said the centre began by producing 500 bottles of 120 millilitre, 250ml, and 500ml sanitizer quantities.

Tasie said, “We look forward towards producing about 5,000 bottles in the next one week once we get the required funding.’

She also thanked the university authorities for reactivating its biotech centre and providing the take-off grants for the commencement of the projects.

“The center will soon go into food production like mushroom and others as soon as the COVID-19 was over,” she added.

Some guests who witnessed the presentation tasked other academic institutions in Nigeria to emulate ESUT by embarking on researches on emerging health challenges. Some also called for funding of such researches by governments and corporate bodies.
